Mary’s Holy Week Scrapbook introduces children to the events of Holy Week while the Holy Week Timeline orientates children to the Holy Week focus of each workshop.  In the Game Workshop children get into the excitement and frenzy of Palm Sunday through two games in which they distinguish between the great expectations the Jewish people placed on Jesus and God’s expectations for God’s Son.  In the Cooking Workshop children prepare a Passover food, participate in a Passover celebration, and they learn of the New Covenant that Jesus gave us.  In the Prayer Walk Workshop children wash each other’s hands and discover the important message Jesus gave his disciples – serve one another in love.  Then they walk to the Garden of Gethsemane and hear of Jesus’ human struggle with what was about to happen.  They are challenged to find their own alone place to pray each day.  In the Historical Reenactment Workshop, Mary’s Holy Week Scrapbook familiarizes children with Jesus’ arrest, trial, death, and resurrection.  Children learn the Jewish burial customs of the day as they reenact a burial in a tomb with a balloon body.  Returning to the tomb, they discover the stone removed, the body they prepared gone, but the linen strips intact just as the disciples and women witnessed.  In the Bible Variety Workshop children delve into the Bible as they follow puzzle clues of the risen Christ.  The assembled puzzle reveals a picture of the risen Christ, biblical proof of his resurrection, and assurance that they are blessed if they believe without seeing.

Special Unit Enhancement:

In this unit children see the events of Holy Week unfold through Mary’s Holy Week Scrapbook.  Children create their own Holy Week Scrapbook in the Scrapbook Workshop.  In each workshop children will write a journal card, receive an artifact for their scrapbooks and have their picture taken. 

During the first five weeks, children rotate through five workshops (Game, Cooking, Prayer Walk, Historical Reenactment, and Bible Variety).  On the sixth week all children will participate in the Scrapbook Workshop where they will create the scrapbook pages for their own Holy Week Scrapbook.

HISTORICAL REENACTMENT WORKSHOP:

Focus:             The Tomb and Resurrection
